History

The experience takes place in a 200-year-old traditional teahouse.

This is a cultural tourism plan by Hakuichi set in Kanazawa Shitsurae, a 200-year-old teahouse building. In this 200-year-old building, built around the time of the founding of Higashi Chaya District, you will have the chance to try your hand at making gold leaf crafts using the same materials and tools as real gold leaf artisans. They will provide detailed explanations, so even beginners can make beautiful crafts.

Experience

Experience decorating lacquerware with gold leaf, just like the artisans do.

Decorate lacquerware with gold leaf using the same tools as artisans. The cultural tourism experience involves painting a typically Japanese "hazy moon" using gold leaf. The vessel is made of solid domestic wood that has been carved out by local craftsmen using the "wood cutting" technique, and then finished with "wiped lacquer" to bring out the beautiful wood grain. The gold leaf is applied using a cylindrical ornament called a "sunakotsutsu." The hazy moon is a misty or hazy moon that can be seen on spring nights. In haiku, it is also a spring seasonal word. A magnificent full moon on a cloudless night is also wonderful, but it is a uniquely Japanese sensibility to find beauty in such an imperfect moon. In this work, small pieces of foil are deliberately used to express an ambiguous and hazy moon.

Culture

Discover the local culture of traditional Japanese sweets.

Experience local Japanese sweets culture during breaks between craft making, we will provide you with matcha tea and sweets. Matcha tea will be served in Ohi-yaki tea bowls, high-quality fresh sweets from Morihachi, a long-established Japanese sweets shop that represents Kanazawa.

Crafts

Feel the essence of true craftsmanship in the heart of a 200-year-old teahouse.

The venue, Kanazawa Shitsurae, is a designated preserved building by the city of Kanazawa. It is one of the representative buildings of Higashi Chaya District, and conveys the typical teahouse style to this day, with its unique latticework style called kimusuko, its bengaranuri exterior, and its Juraku-style walls, which feature clay and leaves. The space on the first floor is a gallery and shop showcasing high-quality crafts from the Hokuriku region, with a wide selection of Kutani ware, Wajima lacquerware, Kaga Yuzen, and more. There is a wide range of products on offer, from works by recipients of the Order of Culture and Living National Treasures to works by up-and-coming young artists. After your craft experience, take your time to browse the local masterpieces.
